Going to a new salon for the first time always carries some element of risk, doesn't it? Is there any guarantee that they'll get it right and give you exactly what you were hoping for? That was our starting point at Premium Old Skool, and everything we do is based on eliminating that risk factor. This is exactly how we do it.

Why "Listen First, Then Plan" Actually Matters
Most salon misfires have nothing to do with inadequate technical ability but with an incorrect match of the client's expectations and the stylist's perceptions. It all happens because stylists tend to start working immediately without discussing anything first. In our case, we follow the opposite approach: learning about your hair, needs and lifestyle precedes making decisions regarding the services we will offer you.
What Happens Before You Even Sit in the Chair
When you book: Whether you're booking through WhatsApp or in person, it helps to give a general sense of what you're looking for: a maintenance trim, a bigger change, a specific concern like frizz or colour fading. This isn't required, but it helps us prepare appropriately for your visit.
When you arrive: For a first-time visit, especially if you're considering a bigger change, we'll usually start with a proper conversation before any cutting, colouring, or styling begins. This is where the actual "listening" part happens.
What We're Actually Asking During This Conversation
- What do you love about your present hairstyle? What would you want to change if you had the chance?
- Have you ever had hairstyles in the past that you absolutely loved, or perhaps even hairstyles that you absolutely hated? What was it that made the difference?
- How long do you actually take styling your hair each day?
- Are you in just for a trim, or are you willing to make some changes?
- Do you have any coming up that will require your hair to look its best such as a wedding or professional event?
- Anything specific to mention regarding your hair such as thinning, frizzy, color fading, and so forth?
None of these questions are meant to interrogate you, they're meant to make sure the plan we come up with actually fits your real life, not just a general trend or a photo you liked.

How This Plays Out for Different Services
For a haircut: We talk through your face shape, hair texture, and styling habits before deciding on the right cut, not just copying a reference photo exactly, since what works for one person's hair often needs adjusting for someone else's texture and lifestyle.
For colour services: We discuss your current colour, your goal colour, how much maintenance you're realistically willing to commit to, and whether a technique like balayage or full head colour fits better with your answer.
For treatments (rebonding, keratin, perms): Since these are more involved chemical services, we assess your hair's current condition and history first, since previous colouring or treatments can affect what's safe and appropriate to do next.
For a bigger restyle: If you're booking a Restyle Consultation specifically (from RM 120, 90 min), this extended time is entirely dedicated to this planning conversation, giving more room to properly think through a bigger change rather than rushing it into a standard appointment.
What You Can Bring to Help the Conversation
- Reference photos - even ones that aren't a perfect match for your hair type; they help communicate the general vibe you want
- Photos of past cuts or colours you disliked - sometimes this is more useful information than what you did like
- An honest answer about your routine - there's no judgment here, we just need accurate information to plan well
- Any relevant history - recent chemical treatments, medications affecting your hair or scalp, or upcoming events
What Happens After the Conversation
Once we have this all sorted out, we'll take you through our process before we begin what will be done, how long it will take, and what you can expect afterwards. In cases where a greater change is necessary, we'll tell you whether it is possible to achieve the results in one visit, or if it is better to go slowly and build it up over several visits.
Why This Approach Especially Helps First-Time Clients
If you’re new around here, then we don’t have a history of your hair, which means this chat is where we establish that knowledge from scratch rather than trying to guess it. In addition to that, we’re taking into account the fact that you may not be good with talking about hair using hairdresser’s language. Our aim is to get to the same point of understanding without it.
What This Looks Like for Repeat Visits
If we’ve styled your hair once before, then we’re already familiar with your hair, your tastes, and your experiences thus making things move that much faster for us. Even so, it’s important to know how anything may have changed in the time between appointments whether new products, lifestyle, or plans on the horizon.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do I need to have an exact idea before I even show up?
No, that's precisely the purpose of the consultation. With just a vague idea or even just issues with your current hair, we can help formulate it into an idea.
2. How long does the consultation process take?
If you're getting a standard haircut or color, it's a conversation prior to the service starting. If you want a more extensive transformation, you should book a special Restyle Consultation (90 min).
3. Do I need to come up with pictures as a reference for my first appointment?
Yes, even if these pictures aren't a complete match, as they can convey the style and atmosphere you like.
4. If there was something wrong with my experience at a different salon in the past, would it be relevant?
Yes, this information is actually quite valuable, as it allows us to understand how to avoid a similar mismatch with your new idea.
5. Is the consultation different for a simple trim versus a bigger change?
Yes, a simple trim involves a quicker check-in, while bigger changes, especially restyles or colour transformations, benefit from a longer, dedicated consultation.
6. Will the stylist tell me if what I want isn't realistic in one visit?
Yes, honest guidance is part of the process. If a change needs to be staged over multiple appointments, we'll explain that upfront rather than overpromising.
7. Does this consultation approach apply to men's services too?
Yes, the same listen-first approach applies across all our services, including men's cuts, facials, and any other treatment you're booking.
8. Do returning clients still go through this process?
In a lighter form, yes. We check in on any changes since your last visit, even though we already have a good understanding of your hair and preferences by then.
